Vagrus Creation (Game Design Post)
13 Feb | 10:00 am

One of the last big additions to Vagrus' Open World Campaign that is now coming very close to being released is the character creation sequence at the start of the game. That is the feature that allows you to customize and set up your own vagrus by selecting a variety of options in subsequent steps. To give a quick idea of the many amazing options, here's a little rundown:

Crew Combat (Game Design Post)
30 Jan | 10:00 am

Crew Combat is the most common way you will handle violent conflicts as you roam the wastelands of the Riven Realms. We wanted to give you a rundown of the basic concepts here so that those interested might find some insights.

Disposition

Each Crew Combat encounter identifies the two sides as either the Attacker or the Defender. The player's comitatus can typically be the attacker when they raid small settlements or prey upon other travelers, while they are often found as the defender when getting accosted by monsters, outlaws, or worse.

Butchering Mechanics (Video)
23 Jan | 10:00 am

Beasts of burden and mounts that a comitatus uses are large animals. They are the lifeblood of a traveling company, carrying people, cargo, and supplies on long journeys through desolate wastelands. Sometimes, however, they can literally become sustenance - in cases when you run out of supplies or when there are not enough workers to tend to them. Still, these creatures are usually very valuable but sometimes butchering them can be the difference between life and death.

Crewcombat Sneakpeek (Video)
16 Jan | 10:00 am

It was a long and difficult haul but as I am writing this, the new Crew Combat feature (in which you can have the whole comitatus fight against a more numerous foe) has been added to the game. To 'Pilgrims of the Wasteland', too, so you can run into all kinds of trouble while out among the dunes of Arenas Vorax in the latter part of the scenario.

Character Artwork - Finndurarth
17 Dec | 10:00 am

By now you have seen a lot of available Companions from Vagrus, but there are still one or two up our sleeves. So, without further ado, let's talk a bit about Finndurarth, a new and powerful potential addition to your team.

The Dragonmage Finndurarth is the protégé of a powerful noble family from the northern Dragonlands. She has shown signs of arcane affinity from early childhood and was tutored by powerful spellcasters who had unlocked her Flame (the source of magical energy that Dragonmages possess) and taught her how to use it well. However, Finndurarth's exceptional upbringing and brilliant mind would lead her to be discontent with 'simply' being a powerful and influential mage, so she also signed up to become a diplomat, honing her inherent talent for speaking and mediating. Though by no means an expert in either, her diplomatic skills as well as magical abilities make the young Dragonmage a valuable asset for any comitatus. However, her inexperience with journeying through wastelands as well as often naive or idealistic world view can spell trouble for her traveling companions.

In gameplay terms, Finndurarth is a powerful spellcaster unlike any other previous Companion. Her lightning-based attacks can deal with single opponents and groups alike - you only have to be aware of her depleting Power statistic that fuels her spells. She can also cast a protective arcane shield on a friendly target and - thanks to her wings - fly to any empty position on the battlefield. You have to be careful though, because although Finndurarth can dish out a fair amount of damage, she is rather on the squishy side.

As for the artwork (created by Bazsó Lossonczy), the challenges involved her having wings as well as many Draconic features like small horns, several different skin tones, inhuman eyes, claws, and more, and yet she had to look likeable and even a bit naive. We are very satisfied with the outcome, and in Finndurarth we see a Companion who is very much apart from the others in look and design yet fits well into the established art style.

The Workforce Feature (video)
07 Nov | 10:00 am

This is just a short video to show you where the 'workforce' stat appears on the crew pane. Selling slaves and sending away workers results in a severe drop in generated 'workforce' and so the comitatus becomes more and more understaffed, incurring serious penalties.

Enduring Effects (Video)
24 Oct | 10:00 am

Hey everyone,

in this short video we demonstrate one of the added new features, Enduring Effects (long-lasting attributes that help or hinder your comitatus), with the Blessing of Sergorod now appearing in the (redesigned) crew UI. Sharp-eyed viewers can spot other differences as well. We are very excited as we have released a new build to our backers and get closer and closer to that big Open World release. Thank you for all the support!

The New Open Access Build (v0.4.5) is OUT!
18 Oct | 6:00 pm

Key Highlights on what's included in the new release

  • Milestone 3 - Extended Narration Voice Over for Agos
  • Milestone 7 - Character Idle Animations in Companion Combat
  • Milestone 8 - Enduring Effects (it means curses, of course)
  • Milestone 9 - Random Passengers, and
  • Milestone 12 - Workforce Mechanics (partially).

The have been or will be game design posts about all but one: narration so let's focus on that for a second.

New Content: Extended Narration
It has taken much longer than expected to reach Charles - the voice of Agos the Wanderer - due to some personal matters as well as his change of career. We are happy to share that now we have all the narration recorded for Agos through-out Pilgrims of the Wasteland, and even for the beginning of the main game as he leaves your comitatus after sharing his story. We plan to make a few minor sound editing changes to these new recordings but wanted to delay this build no further, so we will do that in a subsequent iteration only. When playing the PotW story, it gives so much to it already that we think you will like this a lot. Also, here's a shout-out for Charles' new focus as he instructs singers on how to become more confident. Check out and sign up to support his Patreon page if you are interested.

Obedience and Unrest Mechanics (Game Design Post)
10 Oct | 10:00 am

Obedience is a stat describing how disciplined (or disgruntled) the slaves owned by the comitatus are at a given time. It was implemented to give a rather fluid drawback to owning slaves: they might provide free workforce but keeping men and women enslaved does have its risks even if it is 'part of the system'. You typically lose Obedience if you do not guard your slaves well enough (too few fighters to look after them), if you get or buy a lot of new slaves, if you do not feed them enough, if you arm them in Crew Combat, or keep choosing options in Events that endanger or embolden them.

Workforce Mechanics (Game Design Post)
03 Oct | 10:00 am

Workforce is a fairly hidden stat that measures the complete work output of your comitatus. There are a lot of tasks to be done around a venture like yours in the game, and your workforce has to meet the requirements. These include feeding and tending to beasts and mounts, logistical tasks (such as loading or setting camp), cooking, and much more. This is represented by each type of crew member generating a certain amount of 'workforce need'.

To meet this requirement, your workers and slaves generate 'workforce' (with sometimes passengers potentially adding to the mix as well). Ideally, the workforce generated is enough to cover your needs but this can change fairly rapidly out in the wasteland. For one, low Morale and Obedience - a stat we will tell you more about next week - affect workforce and by losing crew you lose workforce directly.

When you fail to produce enough workforce, bad things start to happen:
  • Understaffed (lower workforce than the requirement) applies Movement Point penalties.
  • Severely understaffed (workforce below 50% of the requirement) applies severe Movement Point penalties.
Additionally, with the new Enduring Effects and the brand new property system we've developed to support them it is possible to assign temporary buffs and debuffs to this stat, too, which goes a long way to spice things up a little.
