Even with our At the Heart of Ruin expansion already out, there is still a lot of artwork from it we would like to share with you. There is a bit of lore, too – lore that many of our player base have come to relish. Thus, we come to you today with the first in a chain of fine pieces our brushmasters put together: the Ancients’ Causeway.
Among points of significance in Varnurud, few are grander and more majestic than the Ancients’ Causeway. The assortment of colossal monoliths have stood for millennia, time and the elements weathering the runes and symbols on their now misshapen surfaces. To this day, they still mostly endure, towering over the surrounding rough terrain in a neat line. In fact, they follow the trajectory of a great causeway of ancient Dvendar Tharr, the Dwarven kingdom of yore. The road itself is barely traceable in the present day, and most would never realize it ever existed if not for the standing stones bedecked with runes and symbols.
Although faded, there are those who can decipher the writings – scholars, historians, and linguists among them. Learned folk of the Riven Realms, all. The texts mostly dwell on a glorious past of myth and legend. In this time beyond memory, heroes and monsters battled with demigods and shaped the very mountains. Ancestors who founded clans delved deep below the earth and carved out a magnificent subterranean realm.
No wonder then that before the time of the lunatic scavenger gangs, explorers and treasure hunters used to visit the monoliths frequently, chipping away at the runed exterior to remove tablets for study. This is much riskier these days, of course, but that should not prevent you from trying.
And it is on that thought that we shall leave you. If you haven’t already, check out the Ancients’ Causeway in our newest expansion, and prepare accordingly – stay wary, stay vigilant, and conquer the wasteland!
