DLC Location Artwork - Dwarf Fortress (not that one!)

Today we’re paying homage to those holds, forts, and fastnesses that the Dwarves – at least those that lived prior to the Calamity – created all over their domain. It’s no secret that such bastions were symbols of Dvendar Tharr’s craftsmanship, military prowess, and ingenuity; indeed, the last of these (especially ones above ground) were the focus of the Inventor Kings. But more than anything, these fortifications speak to a prouder Dwarven past, one that endured until fire and destruction never before witnessed tore it asunder.

Many such fortifications are sprinkled throughout present-day Dvendar Tharr, deep below the earth, where their impregnable walls, fortified crenellations, and massive doors remain relatively intact. Truly, they are a sight for any surface-dweller to behold.

Scattered as they are, these fastnesses contain some of the finest Dwarven infrastructure to exist today. They are also connected by great subterranean roads that were once patrolled by the Dwarves of the kingdom, now fallen to creatures who go bump in the night.

Unlike the rest of Varnurud, they’ve not been picked clean by scavengers, not yet, at least. Simply getting close to them is a feat in itself, while exploring and uncovering what secrets lie beneath is reserved for a chosen few.

What part will the fortifications come to play in the greater story that shall unfold in our At the Heart of Ruin expansion? As always, you will have to wait and see. In the meantime, stay safe, stay awesome, and conquer the wasteland!
