Back to School in the Riven Realms: What Does It Take to Become a Vagrus?
02 Sep | 2:00 pm

The time has come to sharpen your quills, dust off your scrolls, and return to your studies. Or, if you happen to live in the Riven Realms, perhaps also to sharpen your blades, inspect your beasts, and make sure your supplies will last until the next statio.

While there may not be a universally recognized academy capable of preparing someone for the life of a vagrus, surviving the wasteland requires a surprisingly broad education. A successful leader must be part explorer, merchant, commander, diplomat, warrior, and even historian. So, with the season of learning upon us, we thought we'd put together a rather unconventional curriculum.

Welcome to the Riven Realms School of Comitatus Management!

History: Know the World You Walk Through

The Riven Realms are littered with reminders of what came before. Ancient ruins are buried beneath deserts and mountains, forgotten roads cut through accursed stretches of land, and the remains of civilizations long gone can still be found locked in vaults or peddled by treasure hunters. Why was this place abandoned? What exactly happened here? And perhaps most importantly: should we really be opening this door? Knowing something about the past is more than an academic pursuit here – it might be the key to survival. Of course, knowledge can also raise uncomfortable questions, especially in a world ruled by tyrants.

Sometimes, ignorance is bliss. Unfortunately, curiosity, and thus, peril, tends to pay better.

Geography: Try Not to Get Lost

A vagrus spends much of their life on the road. Or off it. The playable regions of the Riven Realms encompass volcanic mountains, scorching deserts, treacherous ravines, dead forests, foul swamps, and countless stretches of accursed wilderness where a wrong turn can prove rather expensive. Understanding the terrain is essential. The shortest route is not always the safest, and the safest route is rarely the cheapest. A good vagrus learns to consider:

  • Terrain and movement costs,
  • Available supplies on the way,
  • Dangerous areas and hostile creatures,
  • Settlements and outposts,
  • Potential trade routes,
  • And, naturally, how much longer the crew can tolerate hearing that you are almost there!

A proper understanding of geography may not guarantee survival, of course. But it certainly improves your chances of finding civilization before everyone starts eating the emergency rations.

Economics: Buy Low, Sell High, Keep Going

Trade is one of the foundations of life as a vagrus. Goods are produced, consumed, imported, and exported across the map, and understanding these relationships can mean the difference between a profitable journey and a comitatus slowly descending into bankruptcy. To be successful, a vagrus must learn to read markets and consider:

  • Where goods are produced,
  • Where they are in demand,
  • How distance affects trade,
  • Which routes are worth the risk,
  • And whether transporting certain cargo is worth attracting every opportunist along the way.

The lesson is simple: a profitable route you can survive is a good route.

Leadership: Managing the Comitatus

No Vagrus travels alone. At the heart of every successful comitatus are the crew: guards, workers, scouts, slaves, specialists, and other individuals who all rely on the leadership of their vagrus. Managing them requires considerably more than simply pointing toward the horizon and shouting, "Forward!" A leader must balance morale, supplies, wages, injuries, workload, and the many competing needs of a travelling group. Decisions made on the road can affect not only the survival of the comitatus but also how those within it perceive their leader. Sometimes, the right choice is obvious. Sometimes, every choice is terrible. Leadership, as it turns out, is mostly difficult decisions followed by the hope you made the right one.

Diplomacy: Know Whom You Are Talking To

The Riven Realms are home to numerous factions, cultures, communities, and individuals with their own interests and goals. A careless word can close doors, while a well-timed favor can open them. Occasionally, the same person who greeted you warmly yesterday may decide that your presence is suddenly extremely inconvenient. Building relationships, earning reputation, and understanding the motivations of others are all essential parts of life in the wasteland. A vagrus must know when to negotiate, when to compromise, and when to quietly leave before the conversation becomes significantly more dangerous. Know your audience. Not everyone appreciates inquiries about their Gods, ancestors, or military leadership.

Combat: When Diplomacy Fails

Occasionally, it will. The wasteland is not a particularly forgiving place. Raiders, creatures, hostile factions, and other dangers ensure that even the most carefully planned journey can take an unexpected turn. A vagrus therefore needs at least a working knowledge of combat. Fortunately, there are different ways to approach danger. Companions can take the forefront in tactical encounters, while the broader comitatus can also be called upon when larger threats emerge. Of course, knowing when not to fight may be just as important.

There is no shame in retreating – live to fight another day.

Final Exam: The Wasteland

So, after studying history, geography, economics, leadership, combat, and diplomacy, are you finally ready to become a vagrus?

Probably not.

Because no amount of studying can truly prepare someone for the Riven Realms. No academy can teach you exactly what to do when a trade route collapses, your supplies run low due to mishap or mismanagement, an ancient ruin offers more questions than answers, or something truly terrifying is approaching from beyond the dunes. Some lessons can only be learned on the road, through mistakes, difficult decisions, and, well, loss. And, occasionally, through spectacularly profitable trade deals.

The real education begins in the wasteland – until next time, stay safe, stay awesome, but also conquer it!
